Heritage breeds

At Anker farm we mostly raise heritage breed animals.  Why? Traditionally, farmers throughout the world have raised thousands of different animal breeds and plant varieties. However, since today’s industrial farms rely upon only a few specialized types of livestock and crops, thousands of non-commercial animal breeds and crop varieties have all but disappeared, along with the valuable genetic diversity they possessed. As sustainable farmers we want to preserve agricultural variety and protect biodiversity by raising “heritage” or “heirloom” animal breeds and crops.

We focus on two groups of animals, mammals and poultry, and within those groups on animals that are known for their hardiness, compatibility with the Central Oregon climate and naturally good tasting meat.
